Following the arrest this morning of State Senator Malcolm Smith on federal bribery charges, the politician’s former career as a real estate developer, which ended in bankruptcy, has come under the spotlight.

Troubled Children of NYC Real Estate Power Players Trend in Tabloids

It’s been a very bad week for the children of New York real estate professionals. Local media outlets have kept busy with a series of stories about heroin and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) busts befalling the descendants of real estate moguls, brokers and crane operators.

Yesterday, the Daily News reported that Kathryn Kalikow was arrested in the Bronx on Sunday night during a heroin “buy-and-bust.” Ms. Kalikow, 28, and her boyfriend, Brian Whalen, had been peddling their wares on Craigslist. She is the daughter of Peter Kalikow, the president of the real estate firm H.J. Kalikow & Company, former commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and, from 1988 to 1994, the owner and publisher of the New York Post. Read More
